Around 335 million years ago, the seven continents on earth were all part of a single, giant supercontinent called the Pangea. The word Pangea come from the word Pangaia meaning all of Earth, which was a very fitting name since all the land of Earth was connected. Scientist believe that Pangea lasted for about 100 million years.

Alfred Wegener first came up with the theory of the Pangea in 1912.  He noticed that the continents looked like they could fit together like pieces of a puzzle.  Additionally, people had found the same fossils on the east coast of South America and on the western coast of Africa, suggesting that the two continents were once connected.

Movement of tectonic plates over time eventually caused the super continent to split and drift apart.  The split also created the various oceans on earth.

Scientists theorize that supercontinents form and break up every 400 million years.  So it is possible that eventually all of the current continents on earth will join back up one day.
